Biobased is one of the attributes that the SGS Green Marks cover as part of its environmental claim certification and verification scheme. As with all other protocols under the SGS Green Marks initiative, the SGS Biobased Material / Product Certification has a clearly defined product scope and criteria based on scientific evidence.
The certification mark includes the SGS Green Mark logo, the protocol name “Biobased”, the percentage of biobased carbon contained in the material or product, and the standard test method used to determine the biobased carbon content, e.g. EN 16640.
Product Scope | – Plastic material or product – Any other solid or liquid sample reviewed by SGS Environmental Claims Certification Scheme team |
General Requirements | The examined material or product shall contain a minimum of: – 30% total carbon based on dry mass, and – 20% biobased carbon content as determined using the standard test methods ASTM D6686, EN 16640 or ISO 16620-2 Plastics. Qualitative analysis must be done via Fourier Transform Infrared Spectroscopy (FTIR) or other analytical methods as suggested by the approved laboratory. |
Certification Validity | 5 years |
Surveillance Requirement | Two surveillance tests shall be arranged. Biobased carbon content testing and qualitative analysis must be done between the 19th-20th month and the 39th-40th month after the certificate issuance. The SGS certification team will notify the client to submit samples for testing in the 18th month and the 38th month after the certificate issuance. |
The SGS Green Marks Biobased program requires that laboratories approved for biobased carbon testing and qualitative analysis are ISO 17025-accredited. For information on how to apply for this biobased label, please contact SGS Green Marks.
